Description

1933 Singer Featherweight 221, First-Day Allotment, Chicago World's Fair Year

A first-year Singer Featherweight Model 221 portable sewing machine, serial number AD550492, manufactured at Singer's Elizabethport, New Jersey plant. Per ISMACS records, this serial falls within the AD block 541546–551545 — a 10,000-unit allotment dated October 3, 1933, the inaugural production run of the 221. The Featherweight was introduced at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair, and this machine is among the earliest consumer units to leave the factory. The cast aluminum body retains its original glossy black japanned finish with gold Egyptian-revival scrollwork to the bed, "SINGER" decal to the arm, and the gilt Singer Mfg. Co. medallion to the pillar. Fitted with the early Catalog 3-110 potted sewing motor and folding extension leaf. Tested and fully functional.

Lot includes the original black textured carrying case (lid restructured, handle replaced), Singer foot controller part no. 193852, a Singer Household Oil tin, three Singer Buttonholer templates, brush, bobbins, thread, needles.

CONDITION

Good and fully functional; tested. Age-appropriate wear throughout including scuffs, scratches, light paint loss, and minor decal rub to the bed and arm. Original foot controller is present, but needs service - a replacement cord is included for it, but not installed -- a screw is absent. Handle to case lid has been restructured, the burgundy handle is a later replacement; case body original. Servicing recommended prior to regular use, as with all vintage sewing machines.
