Description

Mid-Century Expressionist Oil on Canvas — Equine Scene — Unsigned

A bold mid-to-late 20th century expressionist oil on canvas depicting a tall, gaunt equine figure standing over a fallen second figure in a sun-bleached landscape. Painted with confident gestural brushwork over a saturated yellow ochre ground, with drips, splatters, and dramatic passages of black, oxblood, and lavender. The composition reads as a kill scene, mythological encounter, or transformation narrative — ambiguity that gives the piece its haunting power.

The handling is sophisticated: paint applied wet-into-wet, dragged, scumbled, and flung in the manner of Latin American and European neo-expressionism. Clearly the work of a trained hand. The canvas is unsigned front and verso. The frame backing bears an inked red notation reading "CORACHOS" or similar — origin unconfirmed, possibly a title, regional descriptor, or previous owner's mark. Housed in a scuffed wood frame manufactured by L&R Smith.

CONDITION In good condition overall. Paint surface is stable with fine craquelure throughout, consistent with age — no flaking, paint loss, or visible inpainting. Light surface grime and minor scuffing as shown in photos. Canvas remains taut on original stretchers. Frame exhibits scuffing to corners and outer edges. Sold as a vintage work in its original presentation.

DIMENSIONS Framed: 26½ × 36 × 1⅛ inches Visible canvas: 24½ × 34 inches
