Modernist Vessel Still Life Signed Rose — Heavy Impasto, Framed
A large modernist still life centered on a single luminous pale green-white open-topped vessel, isolated against an inky black ground and resting on a deep brick-red plinth. The vessel's top edge tilts forward so the viewer looks down into its interior, where the surface is alive with incised diagonal lines, loose loops, and ghosted gestural marks that read like accumulated memory traces inside a quiet container. The composition reduces still life to its barest contemplative elements — single object, two-zone ground, spotlit isolation — and pushes the Morandi premise into the heavier emotional terrain of late Guston and Tàpies.
The surface is built up in heavy impasto, scraped back and redrawn in successive campaigns so the wax-thick contour of the vessel and the worked red field both carry the physical record of revision. Signed "Rose" lower right. Presented in a wood floater frame, wired and ready to hang. From a multi-state private collection with Delaware, Minneapolis, and Taos provenance — by the same hand as the companion encaustic figural composition offered in this sale.
CONDITION In Good condition. Apparent paint loss to the lower right corner within the red field, visible in the supplemental reference image. The painted surface is otherwise stable, with crisp dimensional impasto throughout and no other remarkable damage.
