Kathleen Keane — Three Figures in Motion, 1974 Mixed Media Painting
A large mixed-media canvas by American painter and journalist Kathleen Keane (Wilmington, Delaware), depicting three children in dynamic forward motion beneath a swirling red, white, and blue banner. Executed in oil and acrylic with newsprint collage worked into the figures — fragments of period newspaper are visible in the legs and torsos, giving the work both texture and a built-in document of its moment. Loose, gestural figuration anchored by a confident compositional rhythm: the three figures stride left to right in a sequential motion study, while the counter-arc of the banner overhead binds the composition. Signed "Keane" in cursive, lower right. Presented in its original silver metal floater frame.
Offered with a facsimile of the original gallery invitation card from Keane's solo exhibition Drawings and Paintings by Kathleen Keane at the Connoisseur Gallery, 1112 Boardwalk, Ocean City, New Jersey — opening May 25, 1974. Keane's career spans more than four decades; her public commissions include an eighteen-foot mural on permanent display at the New Castle (DE) Public Library, and her work is held in public and private collections in the U.S. and abroad. A substantive figurative work from a documented mid-century exhibition, scaled for a statement wall.
CONDITION
Good overall with no apparent damage to the painted surface. Light scuffing to the chrome floater frame consistent with age and handling.
