Description

Hugo Troeds Bjärnum Teak Sideboard, Sliding Doors, c. 1960

Swedish modern teak sideboard produced by Hugo Troeds AB of Bjärnum, Skåne, bearing the original blue-and-white Bra Bohag quality-association label to the interior back panel. Bra Bohag — meaning "good home furnishings" — was a Swedish industry certification mark active from the late 1940s through the 1960s, appearing on pieces that met strict construction and materials standards; its presence here confirms authentic period production. The case presents a symmetrical front: a pair of full-height sliding teak doors fitted with carved oblong recessed pulls flank a center bay of five graduated, dovetail-jointed drawers, the top drawer shallow and felt-lined for flatware. Each door-enclosed cabinet contains a removable, height-adjustable shelf finished in pale birch, and the carcass rides on four slender tapered legs consistent with Swedish interpretations of the period idiom.

Hugo Troeds AB operated in Bjärnum from the early twentieth century and by the late 1950s had become one of the better-regarded Skånska producers of teak and rosewood case goods for the export and domestic markets. This sideboard's drawer construction, leg profile, and proportions are consistent with their output of approximately 1958–1965, placing it comfortably within the firm's most collected period.

CONDITION

Good overall, structurally sound, with sliding doors tracking smoothly and all five drawers operating on their runners without binding. The top surface carries the most notable wear: supplemental reference images document a cloudy water ring, scattered smaller water spots, light surface scratches, and a curved drag mark, all consistent with decades of household use. A short section of the lower sliding-door track trim is absent on one side, which does not impair door function; the tapered legs show light scuffing at the feet.
