Karl Hagenauer Style Art Deco Carved Greyhound Sculpture, Signed Lubek
A stylized Art Deco greyhound carved from a warm-toned fruitwood, seated in alert pose with neck arched skyward, forelegs braced, and the long tail curling forward against a haunch rendered with rhythmic incised fur striations. The figure is mortised into a contrasting dark-stained oak plinth, with a small turned wood ball staged at the forepaw — a witty compositional cue drawn directly from the Viennese Werkstätte vocabulary of Karl Hagenauer and his contemporaries.
Signed "Lubek" in incised block letters on the upper face of the base. The reductive silhouette, exaggerated neck, and graphic fur shorthand align with Central European Art Deco animalier carving of the 1920s–30s, in the orbit of Hagenauer Werkstätte and Czech/Bohemian carvers working for the export and decorator trade. The maker "Lubek" is likley an independent carver working within the established Deco idiom.
CONDITION
Good. Minor surface scuffs and light handling wear consistent with age; no breaks or repairs noted. Patina is even and the carved detail remains crisp throughout.
