Description

English Art Deco Walnut Barrel-Form Vitrine c.1935 Etched Floral Glass

An English Art Deco display cabinet of pronounced barrel silhouette, the figured walnut-veneered case rising from a shaped scroll plinth and framed by a scalloped interior surround typical of British cabinetmaking of the 1930s. Twin sliding glass doors and a curved side panel are decorated with a stylized trailing floral vine in black and silver enamel — a motif drawn from the French Moderne vocabulary as filtered through London trade workshops of the period. The opposite curved side carries a mirrored panel with matching floral decoration, doubling the displayed contents in keeping with the era's appetite for reflective surfaces.

The interior holds two removable glass shelves over a fixed lower deck against a warm figured back panel. Construction is consistent with mid-1930s English commercial Art Deco production — in the manner of makers such as Epstein, Hille, or the broader Tottenham Court Road trade — rather than a signed French atelier piece.

CONDITION

Fair, fully functional, tested. Wear to the wood veneer throughout, flea bites on the glass shelves, and chips along the edges of the sliding glass doors. Notable damage to the wood at the bottom left corner with veneer loss as shown in supplemental photos; some loss to the etched mirror design as well.
