After Ribera "Saint Andrew" Mid-Century Oil — Carved Wood Frame
Mid-century oil study after Jusepe de Ribera's Saint Andrew, rendered alla prima on a black-primed Masonite ground. The apostle emerges through gestural impasto in bone white, ochre, and warm umber — swept-back silver hair built up in heavy ridges, the contemplative downturned face suggested rather than fully resolved, with deep chiaroscuro pulling form forward from shadow. The treatment captures the tenebrist drama Ribera developed under Caravaggio's influence in early seventeenth-century Naples, distilled here into a confident sketch-quality interpretation of the head.
Presented in a hand-carved wood frame with antiqued black-and-gilt finish, stylized leaf carving along the molding, and a natural linen-wrapped liner that floats the panel inside the deep profile.
CONDITION Good. Paint surface presents stable with strong impasto definition intact and the black ground reading cleanly. Frame shows gilt rubs and edge wear consistent with the intentionally antiqued finish; minor handling wear to the linen liner.
