M. Lander 1969 — Five Musicians, Signed Canvas, 30×36

Five male musicians fill this large 1969 canvas — two playing acoustic guitars, a third on what appears to be a tambourine, two more completing the ensemble in a bar or lounge interior. Lander builds the composition around a crossing X formed by two guitar necks: one angles up from the left, the other from the right, and they meet at the optical center of the picture plane, directly on the chest of the central figure — mouth open, green bass in hand, the unambiguous focal point. That crossing is the engine of the painting's energy; everything else is organized around it. Depth is compressed and flat, conveyed through overlap rather than perspective, and the five figures occupy the full width of the canvas in a tight horizontal band that amplifies the crowded heat of a live performance. A four-pane window in the upper right — warm and cool panes alternating — is the only geometric anchor in an otherwise fluid composition, doing quiet structural work against the organic curves of the figures. The foreground table tilts toward the viewer like a raked stage floor, the glass and small object on its surface the only domestic-scale details in an otherwise monumental picture.

The palette — flat fields of green, blue, orange, and purple bounded by heavy black outlines — is squarely in the Pop-inflected figural painting that flourished in the final years of the 1960s, and the compositional thinking behind it holds up. Signed M. Lander lower left, dated 1969. 

CONDITION Good. The painted surface presents well overall, with color remaining vivid and no visible losses or repairs to the paint layer. A pinhole through the canvas is present at the eye of the far left figure and some marks on the surface.
