Description

English Victorian Breakfront Credenza / Display Sideboard
Burl Walnut, Marble Top, Maple & Rosewood Marquetry

An English inverted breakfront credenza in burled walnut veneer, built on a tripartite stepped form with flanking display cabinets projecting forward from a recessed center section. The center carries a variegated rouge-and-gray marble slab; below it, a wide frieze panel is densely inlaid with acanthus scroll marquetry in maple and rosewood. Each outer cabinet features a dovetail-constructed drawer — faced in burl walnut with matching scrollwork inlay and a pierced brass escutcheon pull — over a glazed door with canted corners and a keyhole escutcheon. Pairs of turned baluster columns flank each bay, and rounded cylinder stiles anchor the outer corners above a deep stepped plinth base. A form purpose-built for display, the glazed bays on all three sections were intended to show china, silver, and decorative objects — a drawing room piece as much as a storage one. Two keys are included: one operates the middle and left doors, a second operates the right door independently.

Each of the three glazed bays is fitted with one removable shelf (13¾" H clearance), providing flexible display or storage across all three sections.

CONDITION

Good — age-appropriate wear throughout with scuffs, scratches, and minor chips consistent with long use. The rear panel has a minor section of bowing to the center right, and visible scratches are present on the glass panels. Evidence of previous restoration is present. Structurally sound and displays well.
