Quartersawn Oak Secretary Bookcase — Hand Carved Victorian, Brass
A late Victorian combination secretary-bookcase in quartersawn white oak, American-made circa 1895–1910. The asymmetrical form pairs a tall single-door glazed display cabinet — four adjustable glass shelves — with a fall-front secretary and three-drawer chest, all rising to a shared high-relief hand-carved crest rail. The secretary section is crowned by a superstructure housing a shaped cartouche-form beveled mirror on a swiveling mount, flanked by carved corbels. The fall-front carries a prominent applied rococo acanthus cartouche in deep relief. Three bow-front drawers follow, fitted with original ornate brass bail pulls and keyed escutcheons throughout. The carved scalloped apron and cabriole legs carry the rococo vocabulary to the base. The quartersawn oak figure — pronounced ray fleck across every primary surface — marks this as premium American Victorian production.
CONDITION
Good. Fully functional and tested; stands sturdy. Some wood trim is absent. Wear to the reflective finish on the swiveling mirror. One glass shelf has a small chip.
