Description

Vintage Navajo Sterling Kingman Turquoise + MOP Cobblestone Inlay Buckle

This vintage Navajo belt buckle is a fine example of cobblestone mosaic inlay — a demanding lapidary technique in which each stone is individually cut with beveled edges and a raised, faceted top so the surface projects dimensionally above the silver frame. Dozens of Kingman turquoise tiles pack the center field in a tight geometric arrangement, each one a vivid Arizona sky blue with dark natural matrix, bordered at the perimeter by triangular mother of pearl pieces in clean cream white. The contrast is bold and graphic; the density of the stonework represents considerable time at the bench.

The sterling silver frame is finished with a hand-worked twisted rope border along the top and bottom edges and a scalloped outer surround — both hallmarks of Navajo silversmithing tradition. The reverse carries a hammered silver texture and original belt hardware, tested and secure. Cobblestone mosaic inlay is a distinctly Navajo technique, associated with artists of the Diné Nation who elevated it to a recognized collector category. This example carries no artist hallmark and is listed as attributed Navajo. Kingman turquoise has been drawn from the Mineral Park Mining District of northwestern Arizona since at least 600 AD. At 77.8 grams of tested sterling, this buckle wears with real presence. Condition details below.

CONDITION

Good condition overall. The cobblestone inlay is complete with all stones present and intact. The silver frame shows honest patina and light surface wear consistent with age. Original belt hardware is functional and secure. Polishing is left to the buyer's preference.
