Navajo — Azurite-Malachite and Silver Ring, c. 1960s–70s, Size 11
Azurite-malachite appears far less often in Navajo silverwork than turquoise, which makes this substantial men's ring an uncommon find. Both minerals are copper carbonates, born of the same oxidation processes that formed the great ore deposits of southern Arizona — at Bisbee, Morenci, and Globe — the same copper country that has long sustained Navajo smithing traditions. The combination of cobalt azurite and vivid malachite green in a single stone is geologically intimate and visually striking: no two stones from this mineral pair look alike.
The oval cabochon is set within a twisted rope wire bezel and seated on a broad, domed shank worked with radiating file lines that fan outward from the face. Filing and grooving silver is among the oldest techniques in the Diné tradition, predating stamp work and documented on pieces from the earliest reservation-era smithing. Here the execution is confident and unhurried, the lines clean and evenly spaced, suggesting a smith of real experience.
CONDITION
Good, consistent with age. The silver carries rich natural patina earned over decades of life — structurally sound, no cracks or repairs visible. The cabochon is secure; natural fissures within the stone are inherent to the mineral and visible in photographs. Polishing left to the buyer.
