Zuni Dragonfly Earrings — Turquoise & Sugilite Inlay, Sterling, Signed
These large Zuni channel inlay dragonfly earrings are a masterclass in lapidary work. Each earring is built in sterling silver with four elongated teardrop wings fully inlaid with sky blue turquoise, and a three-segment abdomen set with deep purple sugilite. Two stacked round turquoise cabochons form the head and thorax, accented with silver granule details at every joint — the kind of finishing that separates a well-made piece from an exceptional one.
Sugilite is a rare manganese cyclosilicate mineral prized for its saturated violet hue, and its use here against sky blue turquoise creates a chromatic pairing that is both bold and precisely composed. The dragonfly — known in Zuni tradition as shumakolowa — is among the most revered figures in Pueblo iconography, associated with water, renewal, and good fortune. These earrings carry that symbolism in a format scaled for the wrist: large enough to command attention, refined enough to reward it.
Both earrings are engraved on the reverse with the hallmark "AA" above "Zuni," confirming authentic Native American authorship. The specific artist behind the "AA" hallmark has not been confirmed; buyers interested in further attribution are encouraged to consult Hougart's Hallmarks of the Southwest or a specialist in Zuni silverwork.
CONDITION
Good. All inlay stones are secure in their settings with no cracking, lifting, or loss observed. The sterling silver shows light surface wear consistent with prior wear and age. French hook wires are straight and functional. Polishing is left to the buyer's preference.
