One of the most beloved subjects in vintage Bermuda souvenir jewelry — the iconic "Birdcage," the glazed traffic-control booth that stood at the corner of Church and Queen Streets in Hamilton, Bermuda, where white-uniformed police officers directed traffic by hand for generations. This three-dimensional charm in 14-carat yellow gold captures the scene in precise miniature: a uniformed officer at the ready inside the open lattice-frame structure, with "KEEP LEFT" raised in block capitals along the base — a direct reference to Bermuda's left-hand traffic rules, adopted in 1946.
The Birdcage became one of Bermuda's defining tourist images, appearing on postcards, stamps, and souvenirs throughout the mid-twentieth century. Gold charms of this subject were brought home by visitors as keepsakes of the island's distinctive character.
