Description

Vintage Navajo Sterling Bolo Signed W.D. — Turquoise & Coral

A handsome vintage Navajo bolo tie from the mid-1960s to late-1970s, signed on the reverse with the hallmark W.D. — a maker's mark confirming this is a signed piece, not anonymous work. The artist has not been matched to a published reference, but the hallmark is genuine and present.

The rectangular sterling slide is bordered on all four sides with dense, hand-applied stamp work — alternating rows of arrow chevrons and fan motifs that run the full perimeter with the precision of a practiced hand. At center, an oval bright green turquoise cabochon and a natural orange-red coral piece are set in finely serrated bezels and joined by a silver ball bead accent, a classic Navajo two-stone pairing. The braided leather cord is intact, and the sterling silver cones carry their own light stamp work — the maker's vocabulary carried through every element of the piece.

The Bennett Pat. Pend. locking slide on the reverse is a well-documented dating marker, placing this bolo firmly in the classic era of Navajo silver production. Collectors seeking to confirm the W.D. attribution are encouraged to consult Hougart's Native American and Southwestern Silver Hallmarks. A signed, wearable piece from a documented era, offered at no reserve.

CONDITION

Good. Both stones are secure in their settings. The silver carries natural patina with age-appropriate darkening in the recessed stamp work, consistent with vintage hand-fabricated silverwork. The braided leather cord shows honest age and remains intact and functional. The Bennett clip mechanism operates as designed. Polishing is left to the buyer. Please review all photos carefully prior to bidding.
