Navajo Sterling Silver Paua Shell Cuff — Quad-Shank, Stamped
A quadruple-shank Navajo cuff centered with an oversized oval paua shell cabochon displaying deep violet and magenta iridescence with flashes of electric blue. The stone sits in a scalloped sterling bezel encircled by dense hand-stamped silverwork — undulating serpentine channels flanked by dot-and-dash borders and radiating sunburst fan motifs filling the outer rim of the face plate.
Four parallel sterling bands soldered to the wide oval face give this piece substantial presence and comfortable weight distribution across the wrist. Abalone shell has carried deep significance in Navajo culture for generations, used in ceremony and valued as a symbol of prosperity and healing. The paua variety is among the most coveted of all abalone species, prized for the depth and intensity of its natural violet iridescence. Few stones produce this color without enhancement; paua does it entirely on its own.
The piece is unmarked, consistent with production predating the widespread adoption of silversmith hallmarks. Sterling content independently tested and confirmed.
CONDITION
Good. The silver carries light oxidation within the recessed stamping, which sharpens contrast in the toolwork and is consistent with age and use.
