Antique French Oval Grape Bucket — 19th C, Wooden Bands, Wall Mount
A working piece of French rural material culture, this mid-19th century vendange bucket was purpose-built for the grape harvest — oval in form, stave-constructed, and bound with shaped wooden hoops rather than metal banding. The body is built from narrow vertical planks coopered into an oval form, with two wooden hoop courses cinching the exterior; the joinery throughout is entirely hand-worked, with no evidence of machine production. The integrated flat backboard rises well above the bucket rim, terminating in a round hanging hole for wall display; a lower cutout carry handle and decoratively scalloped shoulder transition give the piece a sculptural presence that goes well beyond utility. The deep chestnut patina, earned over generations of harvest use, saturates every surface uniformly — the kind of color no reproduction achieves.
The "potager" dealer tag remains attached, a provenance touchpoint from the specialty French country trade that sourced this piece, along with a secondary tag identifying it as an antique French mid-19th century oval grape bucket with wooden bands and back wall mount.
CONDITION
Good. Age-appropriate wear throughout with honest patina consistent with 19th-century working use. Several vertical stave planks are loose with noticeable residue accumulation along their seams; wooden banding remains intact on all courses.
