Mexican Folk Art Cruz — INRI, Guadalupe, Stigmata, Rosary
A substantial 20th-century Mexican folk art devotional cross (cruz), hand-painted in a bold tricolor scheme of robin's-egg blue, white, and ochre gold — a palette consistent with regional Catholic home altar and cemetery traditions. The hand-lettered INRI tablet, nailed to the stipe with a stippled border surround, signals individual artisan work rather than commercial production. At the exact intersection of the cross, a paper chromolithograph of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe — printed in green monochrome, the convention of inexpensive shrine devotional prints — is pinned at center. Placing Guadalupe at the crossing of the cross is an intentional iconographic choice common in Mexican folk Catholic devotion, positioning the patron saint of Mexico at the literal heart of the Passion symbol. Two red painted stigmata dots mark the ends of the crossbar, completing the iconographic program. The piece stands on a painted half-round wooden base and carries the honest patina of long devotional use.
Included in the lot: black bead rosaries, draped as displayed.
CONDITION Good. Age-appropriate wear throughout, including crazing and paint loss across the painted surface. The Guadalupe paper image at the crossing is fragmentary and torn. Chipping noted along the perimeter of the base. Stands sturdy.
