Hammered Copper Jam & Preserving Basin — Ring Handles, 19.5", 11 lbs
A large, heavy-gauge hand-hammered copper preserving basin — the form known in French kitchens as a bassine à confiture and in Mexican tradition as a cazo de cobre — purpose-built for serious production: jam, candy, confiture, dulce de leche, and open-fire cookery. The body is shaped from thick copper with an all-over planished hammer texture, flaring outward from a flat base to a wide open rim that maximizes evaporation surface — the functional geometry that makes copper the preferred material for jam making. Two forged copper ring handles are riveted directly through the wall, a construction hallmark of professional working copperware. At 19½ inches in diameter and 11 pounds, this is a large-format example — well above the 14–16 inch range typical of most surviving pieces on the secondary market.
CONDITION
Good. Imperfections present throughout consistent with active working use — surface scratches, oxidation at the handle rivets, and patina variation across the exterior. Exterior surface is tacky to the touch.
