Description

James Bonsall Oil Landscape Tree Painting Signed

Original oil on stretched canvas by Louisiana artist James Belton Bonsall (1926–1999), signed lower right. This striking mid-century composition features a solitary, stylized tree set against a vivid pink sky and calm blue water, likely inspired by the Gulf Coast landscape. The tree—reminiscent of a live oak or weathered coastal form—is rendered in bold, gestural brushwork, its twisting branches creating a strong vertical presence against the simplified horizon.

Balancing representation and abstraction, the painting moves beyond a literal landscape into a more expressive, atmospheric interpretation. The saturated pink sky functions as an emotional color field, contrasting with the still water and lending the work a heightened, almost symbolic quality. Trees were a recurring motif in Bonsall’s work, often serving as both subject and anchor within his Southern-inspired compositions.

Presented in a substantial wood and plaster frame with a linen mat, the piece offers strong visual impact and clear mid-century character.

Artist Biography:
James Belton Bonsall (1926–1999) was a Louisiana-born painter associated with the New Orleans French Quarter art community. Born in Grand Chenier, he served in World War II with the U.S. Army’s 99th Infantry Division under General Patton before studying fine arts at Louisiana State University. He later worked in California in set design for theater and film, then returned to New Orleans in the 1950s where he became part of a vibrant artistic circle. Bonsall produced landscapes, figurative works, and abstract compositions, often emphasizing stylized natural forms. He exhibited regionally and maintained a lifelong artistic practice alongside careers in advertising and social services.

A compelling example of Bonsall’s expressive approach to the Southern landscape, this work combines bold color, simplified form, and strong compositional presence—appealing to collectors of mid-century and regional American art.
