Carved Oak Baroque Commode — Ex-Collection Lt. Gen. Cassidy
Few pieces arrive with every surface spoken for. This four-drawer serpentine-fronted oak commode — Northern European Baroque, early 18th century — carries hand-cut relief carving across every face: scrolling acanthus, strapwork, and foliate panels on each drawer front, continuous carved panels on both sides, and an acanthus-bordered top. The serpentine fronts are divided into three carved bays per row, each panel carrying its own distinct motif — urns, foliate clusters, crosshatch-ground scrollwork — so that no two panels repeat. Brass flower-form bail pulls and ornate engraved escutcheons dress each drawer. Hand-cut dovetail construction throughout. Paneled back. Shaped bracket feet with cut-out apron. At over 300 years old, it has earned every mark it carries.
The provenance is as compelling as the piece. This commode was acquired in 2000 directly from the estate of Lt. General R.T. Cassidy (USA, Ret.) — West Point Class of 1940, Commanding General of Fort Bliss, Commander of NORAD, President of the Paso del Norte Hotel Corporation, and Vice President of El Paso National Bank. A decorated soldier and community cornerstone whose collection was assembled from postings and travels spanning three continents. The original Cassidy estate sale clipping remains in the top drawer.
CONDITION Good. Visible splits throughout the case, including an open seam along the top surface and cracking at the front right corner molding with minor wood loss. Age-appropriate wear to all surfaces including scratches and dark staining to the top. Two lock mechanisms are absent; no key present.
