Description

Jasper Cabinet Co. Red Lacquer Secretary Bookcase — Birch, Colonial

A vintage secretary Bookcase by the Jasper Cabinet Company of Jasper, Indiana, finished in deep vermilion lacquer with cream pinstripe banding and brass Chippendale-style bail hardware throughout. Crafted in genuine birch, the cabinet opens via double arch-panel doors to reveal 14 tongue-and-groove drawers and 13 cubby compartments — an extensively fitted organizational interior finished in matching lacquer. Door panels carry a hand-painted colonial motif of drum, bugle, and wheat wreath in cream, repeated on both doors. One key is included.

The lower fall-front writing surface opens on auto-slide supports to expose two additional drawers and eight cubby compartments. Four dovetail-construction graduated drawers below ride on ogee bracket feet. Jasper Cabinet Co. was a well-regarded Indiana furniture manufacturer producing solid, traditionally styled American pieces through much of the mid-20th century. Original retail was $679.50.

CONDITION

Good. All drawers operate, the fall front opens and supports correctly, and no odors are present. Noted flaws: scorch marks to the drop-down writing surface, a visible seam to the right side panel, minor scuffs and dings to the legs, and one decorative knob is absent from the right slide-out fall-front support.
