Description

Mission Tumacacori Ruins Lenore Oil on Canvas, Framed

An original oil on stretched canvas depicting the ruins of Mission San José de Tumacácori — a Spanish Colonial mission founded in 1691 in what is now southern Arizona, preserved today as Tumacácori National Historical Park. The composition faithfully captures the mission's iconic adobe facade, domed nave, collapsed bell tower, and arched gateway set against an expansive Sonoran desert landscape with distant mountain ranges and a luminous, cloud-filled sky. Indigenous figures and free-ranging chickens populate the foreground, animating the scene with the quiet rhythms of daily life in a manner consistent with historic artistic depictions of the site.

The artist works in a loose, expressive hand with a warm palette of siennas, umbers, and sandy earth tones balanced by cool desert blues — a treatment well-suited to the Southwest regionalist tradition this subject invites. The painting is signed "Lenore" in white paint at the lower right; the artist has not been further identified beyond the single name signature, though works attributed to this hand have appeared in the American antique painting market with asking prices in the $675–$1,500 range. Presented without glass in a solid oak frame, allowing the canvas texture to remain fully visible. A compelling piece for collectors of Southwest Americana, Arizona history, mission architecture, or regional landscape painting.
