Zimbabwean Springstone Male Portrait Bust — Shona Style
A hand-carved springstone portrait bust depicting a male figure with a furrowed brow, deeply set eyes, broad nose, and an open mouth revealing individually carved upper and lower teeth — an uncommon detail in Shona portraiture. The subject wears a traditional wrapped head covering that sweeps back and upward; the warm ochre of the burnished facial planes transitions to cool gray-green at the chest and base, with dark mineral inclusions speckled throughout. The flat unfinished base exposes the raw stone cross-section, and the contrast between the mirror-polished face and tool-marked chest is characteristic of mid-to-late 20th-century Zimbabwean stone carving.
CONDITION
Good. The piece is structurally sound throughout, and the polished facial surfaces retain solid luster with no active losses. Light surface scratching is distributed across the chest and lower body consistent with age and handling; a small spall is present at the left ear cavity.
