Pine Gear Cog Wheel Swivel Table — Ethan Allen Old Tavern, 1970s
A sculptural standout from Ethan Allen's Old Tavern Collection, this solid pine coffee table is built in the form of an oversized gear wheel — its toothed perimeter, flat disc surface, and raised center hub cut entirely from wood and finished in a deep, dark-stained pine. The top rotates a full 360 degrees on an octagonal pedestal that steps down to a square platform base. At 3 inches thick, the top carries real visual weight; this reads as furniture, not decoration. The form was produced in the 1970s and has since found audiences well beyond traditional Colonial collectors — industrial, MCM, and steampunk interiors all claim it.
Ethan Allen introduced the gear table as part of their Old Tavern line during a period when the company operated multiple sawmills and manufacturing plants out of Vermont, building solid-wood pieces with doweled and spliced joinery intended to last generations. This example holds up to that standard structurally — the swivel functions, the base is solid, and the piece carries its age honestly.
CONDITION Good. Structurally sound throughout — the swivel mechanism operates and the base shows no wobble or instability. Surface presents honest wear consistent with decades of use: scattered scratches, scuffing, finish wear, and indentations distributed across the top and base.
