Knotty Pine King Sleigh Bed — Rope-Twist Crest, Diamond Parquetry

A king-size sleigh bed in the Louis Philippe tradition, crafted in knotty pine solids and veneers in the late 20th century — the larger sibling to our queen example. The headboard and footboard panels are filled with diamond parquetry — pine veneer tiles set on the diagonal in a repeating pattern that shifts tone and grain direction with the light, giving the surface a quilted, almost architectural depth. The natural knots distributed across the panels read as character rather than flaw, reinforcing the warmth and rusticity the form invites.

Above each panel, a continuous rope-twist carved crest rail spans the full width of the board, a motif borrowed from Regency-era case furniture that here reads as both bold and refined. The footboard corners terminate in dramatic outward-scrolling volutes, with conforming carved scrollwork descending the headboard side rails to matching volute feet. A stepped ogee plinth base and turned bun feet ground the composition without competing with the carving above. Despite its condition, the piece presents well at distance and would respond favorably to a professional refinish.

Rails and center supports are not included, previously used with an adjustable bed. Mattress and bedding are not included.

CONDITION

Fair. Scratches and scuffing are present throughout the finish — most visible across the parquetry panels and on the carved scroll terminals — and are cosmetic in nature with no structural compromise. The piece retains good presence and presents better than its condition grade suggests; a refinish would restore it fully.
