Carved Wood Duck Figurines, Pair — Indian Folk Art, Brass & Copper
A matched pair of hand-carved wood duck figurines in the Indian folk craft tradition, each decorated with elaborate mixed-metal overlay work on the wings. The smaller duck carries a dark-stained finish with alternating fish-scale-textured white metal and hardwood panels bordered by stamped brass strips, a brass dome eye, and a brass bill. The larger duck presents a lighter, pale wood ground with sweeping inlaid panels of copper and white metal within engraved brass borders, a brass neck collar with geometric stamped detail, and a brass bill. "Made in India" label present on base.
The metalwork technique — layered brass and copper applied directly to carved wood — is consistent with Rajasthani decorative craft traditions and was widely exported as decorative folk art from the mid-to-late 20th century. Lot of two.
CONDITION
Good. No damage; the distressed, worn appearance is inherent to the style and finish of both pieces. The smaller dark-finish duck retains crisp metal detail; the larger pale-wood duck shows more pronounced patina across the body and light surface oxidation to the copper inlay panels.
