Chichimeca Mexican Folk Art Pottery Chargers — Fruit Motif, Set of 3
Three large hand-painted ceramic chargers bearing the "Chichimeca" mark — a name rooted in the pre-Columbian peoples of north-central Mexico and adopted by folk pottery workshops, most commonly associated with the Jalisco craft centers of Tonalá and Tlaquepaque. Each plate features an exuberant tropical fruit still-life rendered in bold, flat color: pineapples, watermelon, grapes, papaya, oranges, and bananas stacked against contrasting ground colors of black, crimson red, and turquoise. The brushwork is confident and loosely gestural, consistent with the hand-production tradition of Mexican market pottery at its most vivid.
All three carry the hand-lettered "Chichimeca" mark on the reverse with a descending triple-line symbol beneath. Hanging hardware is present on each — one with a cord loop, one with a wire bail.
CONDITION
Good overall — colors remain saturated and the glaze retains its gloss across all three plates. The black-ground plate shows a visible white paint scuff or glaze disruption in the lower center field; the red-ground plate shows minor glaze loss along the rim and a small paint irregularity at the lower left edge. Light handling wear to the unglazed reverses is consistent with age and use.
