German Railway End-of-Train Lantern Kosmos Brenner OSMEKA Iron
Authentic German railway end-of-train lantern (Zugschlusslaterne), attributed to Osnabrücker Metallwerke (OSMEKA) and fitted with a classic Kosmos Brenner kerosene burner. Dating to the mid-20th century, this substantial iron lantern was mounted on the final wagon to signal a complete train—casting a red warning light to the rear while reflecting white forward, with the bold red-and-white side panel serving as a daytime marker.
Its industrial form is both purposeful and striking: a black enameled steel body, large red bullseye lens, vented chimney, and distinctive four-foot base designed to secure the lantern in rail fittings. The interior retains its original burner assembly, offering a glimpse into the working mechanics of historic railway operations.
A compelling piece of railroad history, equally suited for display or collection, embodying the rugged utility and visual language of European rail systems.
Condition:
Good vintage condition with dents, dings, and age-appropriate wear throughout. Areas of rust/oxidation and finish loss are visible, and portions of the black exterior appear to have been repainted. The red glass lens shows surface scratches but remains intact. The Kosmos burner is present; functionality has not been tested.
Dimensions:
Without handle: 17 1/2 x 7 x 7 inches
