Hubert Herr Black Forest Cuckoo Clock — Swiss Romance Music, 3-Weight
A full-featured Black Forest chalet cuckoo clock with a movement stamped "Hubert Herr, Triberg, Germany" — one of the Schwarzwald's most respected names in mechanical clockmaking. Hubert Herr was the only Black Forest manufacturer to produce its movements, carvings, and cases entirely within its own Triberg workshop, a distinction it maintained across five family generations before closing in 2020. The hand-carved linden wood case presents a traditional farmhouse with a shingled roof, painted flower boxes, carved fir trees, a blue-paddle water wheel, and a decorative pendulum with a cross-shaped bob. The dial carries carved leaf-pattern hands and Roman numerals on a turned chapter ring, with "Made in Germany" inscribed at the lower rim.
The three-train weight-driven brass movement powers timekeeping, hourly cuckoo strike, and a Romance Swiss Musical Movement (Model 2708, 22-leaf comb) — a Swiss-made musical module associated with Reuge of Ste-Croix, known for richer tone than standard 15- to 18-note movements. The movement plays three melodies in rotation: Der fröhliche Wanderer, Edelweiss (traditional), and Edelweiss by Richard Rodgers. Four animated dancers appear on the upper balcony, two horn-playing musicians perform at the lower platform, and a cuckoo bird emerges on each strike cycle. A side-mounted rack strike lever allows the chime to be silenced independently. Inspected, serviced, and confirmed as a strong runner by Clock Manor.
CONDITION
Good. Fully functional, tested, and running cleanly following service at Clock Manor. Carved surfaces and hand-applied painted details show light wear consistent with display use; no structural damage, missing figures, or broken carvings observed.
