Description

Cast Iron Naughty Nellie Bootjack — Original Paint, 19th C.

American cast iron "Naughty Nellie" bootjack, late 19th century, retaining original hand-applied paint. The figure reclines with legs raised and spread wide — the V-shaped heel catch of this iconic erotic novelty form — finished in cream-white body paint with black hair, red lips, and a bold red waistband. Naughty Nellie was associated with the Dance Hall Girl of the American West and was considered scandalous for her era; bootjacks in her form were a fixture of Western bunkhouses and a collectible novelty from their earliest production.

Naughty Nellie bootjacks are among the most actively collected and most frequently faked forms in American cast iron antiques. Vast quantities of Taiwan-made reproductions flooded the antique trade beginning in the 1970s and are widely encountered today. This example is an original period piece — not a reproduction — and retains its original paint, a combination that collectors specifically seek out and that plain-cast or repainted examples cannot match.

CONDITION

Good. Original paint survives across the body with age-appropriate crazing and finish wear throughout — heaviest loss along the sides, back edge, and lower torso where the underlying iron is exposed. The red waistband paint shows pronounced crazing and partial loss consistent with decades of age; black hair retains solid coverage with minor flaking at the edges. Scuffing consistent with working use.
