Description

French Walnut Cave à Liqueur — Etched Glass Doors, Barley Twist, Cremone Bolt

A late 19th to early 20th century French or Continental cave à liqueur — a locking parlor drinks cabinet — in solid walnut, blending Gothic Revival structure with Art Nouveau surface decoration consistent with French and Belgian workshop production of the 1895–1910 period. The lower cabinet section features two full-height doors glazed with frosted etched glass panels, each depicting a chrysanthemum arrangement rising from a Greek key–decorated classical urn, framed by pointed Gothic arch mullions with hand-carved leaf appliqués at their intersections. Frosted glass was intentional — it concealed the contents from household staff and guests while presenting an elegant decorative face outward. The doors are secured by an original brass cremone bolt, a full-length Continental rod-locking mechanism that engages simultaneously at both the top and bottom of the door frame, making these cabinets genuinely secure rather than merely decorative.

The upper gallery section is backed by two raised-panel doors with cartouche molding and flanked by paired barley-twist columns — a Louis XIII revival element widely used in French parlor furniture of this period — supporting a stepped cornice with scalloped apron. The oak interior provides two adjustable shelves with a center divider. The back is constructed in pine with oak panels, consistent with period Continental secondary wood practice and not visible in display position.

CONDITION

Good. The etched glass panels are intact with no chips or cracks, and the carved millwork and barley-twist columns retain crisp detail throughout; the piece is all-original. The Gothic arch tracery on the door panels shows joint separation at several points — the curved mullion pieces have opened at some intersections and some arch section shows a visible gap. Finish wear and loss are present across several surfaces with more pronounced wear to the right back panel. The original brass cremone bolt and key are included; the key turns freely but the locking rods are seized from disuse and do not currently engage.
