Description

The Kennedy Rocker — Oak, Woven Rattan Seat & Back

The Kennedy Rocker is one of the most storied chair designs in American furniture history. Originally called the "Carolina Rocker" and designated Style No. 1,000, it was produced by P&P Chair Company of Asheboro, North Carolina — a family-owned shop founded in 1926. The chair came to national prominence when back specialist Dr. Janet Travell prescribed it to President John F. Kennedy for chronic back pain; White House photographs of Kennedy in the chair made it internationally recognized almost overnight. This example is solid oak with a 2" frame, high back with turned ball finials, flat paddle armrests on double-turned spindles, steam-bent rear posts, and a full ladder-stretcher base. The seat is woven in a tight herringbone flat-reed pattern; the back panel uses a wider open plain weave. Interlocking joinery with no glue is a hallmark of the original P&P construction.

CONDITION
Good. Frame is structurally sound and fully functional with surface finish wear on both armrests consistent with use. There are small screw holes present at the top right corner of the back where a brass plaque was previously mounted, and the rattan shows light general wear.
