Description

Navajo Ganado Style Wool Rug — Cream Ground, Red & Brown, Early 20th C.

A hand-woven Navajo wool rug in the Ganado regional tradition, produced during the transitional period between the Hubbell Revival era and the classic red-ground Ganado style — placing its likely origin in the 1910s to 1930s. The design presents two stepped-diamond medallions on a natural ivory field, surrounded by geometric satellite elements and anchored by a bold serrated outer border in dark brown with a Ganado Red inner surround. This cream-ground layout, distinct from the later red-field Ganado rugs of the 1930s and beyond, represents an earlier compositional moment in the style's development — one shaped directly by trader Juan Lorenzo Hubbell's preference for the palette of red, white, black, and natural brown that would define the Ganado aesthetic for a century. Woven at 10 warps and 7 wefts per inch, the construction is solid reservation-production quality consistent with the period.

Ganado-style rugs have been a consistent presence in American interiors since the Arts & Crafts era, when their bold geometry was recognized as a natural complement to Mission and craftsman furniture — a pairing that remains as valid today.

CONDITION

Fair. The rug retains its structure and the Ganado composition reads clearly across the full field. One face shows some UV fading relative to the reverse, creating a visible color differential; distributed small stains are present throughout. Selvedge shows discoloration and wear on multiple sides. Old repairs are present in at least one design area and are less refined than the surrounding weave — visible on close inspection. Best suited to a decorative buyer comfortable with conservation or display use.
