Opera Glasses Mother-of-Pearl & Brass Figural Handle — 19th Century
A late 19th-century lorgnette-style opera glass pairing a brass binocular body with vertical mother-of-pearl panel inlays set into the bridge and sides, and a telescoping handle clad in matching faceted MOP strips. The handle is bracketed at both ends by cast brass collars featuring ornate figural and foliate relief in high detail, extending via a slender brass rod that terminates in a turned ball finial. The focusing mechanism is a central knurled brass wheel; the eyepiece cups retain their original rubber surrounds. Unmarked.
CONDITION Good. The mother-of-pearl panels display strong iridescence and the brass carries an even age patina throughout. One section of MOP inlay is absent from the binocular body. Some debris is present behind the lenses but does not affect function.
