Description

Flemish Renaissance Oak Confiturier — Barley Twist, Lion Masks, 17th C. or Later

A single-door confiturier of exceptional quality in quartersawn European oak, executed in the Flemish Renaissance tradition. The overhanging cornice is carved with a bold frieze of scrolling acanthus and winged figures flanking a central cartouche, its underside gadrooned and its corners anchored by fully modeled lion mask corbels with brass ring handles. Full-height barley-twist columns flank the door on both sides, built into the frame rather than applied — a mark of quality construction. The door itself is the centerpiece: carved in deep relief with an all-over geometric meander of interlocking angular forms, a vocabulary drawn directly from 17th-century Flemish cabinetwork of the southern Netherlands, centered on a lion mask boss with brass ring pull within a guilloche border. Continuous nulling ornaments the base plinth.

The secondary surfaces make a compelling case for genuine age. The back planks show deep grain-following cracks and fully oxidized shrinkage consistent with centuries of movement. The unexposed top surface has developed the silver-gray patina that only prolonged exposure produces. Hand-forged iron fasteners are present at the cornice junction and hand-plane tool marks survive on the interior shelf boards. The interior provides one fixed shelf and a dovetailed drawer. The original key is included. Independent specialist examination is recommended prior to purchase.

CONDITION

Good, with wear consistent with claimed age. Carving retains strong definition throughout with an even, well-developed patina — characteristic tonal contrast between polished high points and wax-darkened recesses. Minor grain-following cracks to the back corner brackets; hairline gap along the center joint of the top boards and other panels.
