Cliff Fragua Bronze Sculpture 1/30
Corn Maiden, Jemez Pueblo, 1999, Stone Inlay
A limited-edition cast bronze sculpture by Cliff Fragua (b. 1955), enrolled member of Jemez Pueblo and the only Native American sculptor with a work in the National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol. Trained under Apache master Allan Houser at the Institute of American Indian Arts and at the Pietrasanta Stone Workshop in Italy, Fragua works bronze and natural stone as equal materials — treating the stone body not as a base but as flesh and presence. This figure depicts a Corn Maiden, a central figure in Pueblo ceremonial tradition, identified by her stepped tableta headdress rising from a warm rose-and-ochre stone body. The bronze portrait is serene and precise, with a multi-strand heishi necklace rendered in turquoise patina and a small fan shell pendant at the chest. A deeply engraved inlaid bronze panel dominates the lower form, carrying bold Southwest geometric motifs — lightning arrows, stepped triangles, and diamond forms — with a turquoise-patinated accent line and a textured dark stone disc inset above. The reverse presents a fully resolved abstract composition of striated flowing hair merging into the stone cloak — complete from every angle. Signed "C. FRAGUA '99©" with the Singing Stone Studio (SSS) foundry mark and numbered 1/30, this is the first casting of the edition. The sculpture seats on a natural-finish oval wood base.
CONDITION Very Good. Bronze patina is rich with excellent detail throughout; turquoise patina accents on the necklace and panel line are vivid and intact. Minor surface wear to the stone body consistent with age; wood base shows light handling marks on the upper edge.
