Description

Cliff Fragua Bronze Sculpture 13/30
Jemez Pueblo, 1998, Stone Inlay Figure

A limited-edition cast bronze sculpture by Cliff Fragua (b. 1955), enrolled member of Jemez Pueblo and the only Native American sculptor with a work in the National Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol. Trained under Apache master Allan Houser at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe and at the Pietrasanta Stone Workshop in Italy, Fragua is known for figures whose flowing lines and patinas evoke the landscape and spiritual traditions of the Pueblo Southwest. This vertical form depicts a Native American woman emerging from an oval warm-ochre stone body — a signature approach in which bronze and natural stone are treated as equal materials rather than figure and base. The front face presents a modeled bronze portrait with flowing hair, tassel necklace, and a deeply engraved inlaid bronze panel carrying Southwest motifs: stepped geometric forms, scrollwork, mountain silhouettes, and a centered inset stone disc representing the sun or moon. A gold-toned coil band cinches the composition at mid-form. The reverse reads as a self-contained abstract composition of gathered, bound hair — complete from every angle.

Signed "C. FRAGUA '98©" and stamped 13/30 by Bronze Smith foundry. Fragua's limited bronze editions typically run in editions of 30, with multiple editions having sold out entirely. The sculpture seats on a 1.75" painted wood base with felt bottom.

CONDITION Good. Bronze patina is rich and engraved detail throughout the figure is crisp and well-defined. Finish wear present on the bronze surface consistent with age and handling; painted wood base shows notable finish wear with scattered paint loss exposing raw wood along the edges.
