LaCessit Murdoch Scottish Highland Flintlock Pistol Replica — Cast Brass/Aluminum

A non-firing decorative replica of the Scottish Highland all-metal flintlock pistol in the style of John Murdoch of Doune, Perthshire, produced under the LaCessit brand. The Murdoch name became so synonymous with this form that Scottish steel pistols of this type are still commonly called Doune or Murdoch pistols. The replica follows the form closely: cast brass and aluminum construction throughout, "MURDOCH" cast into the lock plate cartouche, scrolled volute rams-horn butt with turned ball pommel and pendant ball trigger, fluted multi-stage barrel with working ramrod beneath, and pierced Gothic-arch panel at the tang. The grip carries an inset polychrome enamel medallion bearing the thistle device and the motto "VR / LACESSIT" — drawn from "Nemo me impune lacessit," the motto of Scotland — in red, navy, and gold, with a secondary oval portrait cameo medallion on the barrel rib.

The design is modeled on the presentation-grade Murdoch pistols of ca. 1780, including the famous pair made for Lord Amherst — now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art — which bear nearly identical enamel medallions with the Royal Badge of Scotland and this same motto.

CONDITION

Very Good. Cast finish retains strong coverage throughout with light handling wear on the lock and barrel flat. Minor enamel loss to the red ground near the upper border of the grip medallion; light oxidation on the steel-finish barrel.
