Tohono O’odham Papago Mini Basket Pair Handwoven Coiled
A pair of miniature handwoven baskets attributed to the Tohono O’odham (historically referred to as Papago) of southern Arizona. Both are worked in traditional coiled construction, likely using yucca fibers with darker devil’s claw accents forming understated circular motifs. This combination of materials and patterning is characteristic of Tohono O’odham basketry documented in Southwest collections.
Their shallow, low-profile form and small scale are consistent with pieces made for sale or trade during the 20th century, rather than larger utility forms. The stitching is tight and deliberate, with visible variation in the natural fibers that reflects handwork rather than uniform production.
Condition:
