Native American Papago Basket & Import Olla Jar — 2-Piece Lot, Coiled & Plaited
Lot of two baskets of differing origin and construction. The Papago piece is a shallow coiled tray worked in natural beargrass with dark devil's claw accents forming concentric banded rings from a flat cross-stitch center, consistent with Tohono O'odham (Papago) utilitarian basketry. The exterior carries typical age patination with visible fiber wear around the sides. The second piece is an imported olla-form jar constructed in a wide-strand plaited twill technique using ivory, dark brown, and terracotta-toned reeds in a diagonal herringbone pattern, with a bulbous body, constricted waist, and flared open rim finished with a frayed edge.
CONDITION
Papago tray: Good, with age-appropriate wear and minor fiber deterioration around the sides. Structure is intact with no losses to the weave field. Import olla: Good, no damage noted; construction is intact throughout with a clean interior.
