Antique Child's British Colonial Cane Rocking Chair — Scroll Arms
A child's scale British Colonial plantation rocking chair, most likely of Ceylonese or Anglo-Indian origin and dating to circa 1880–1910. The solid hardwood frame — consistent with satinwood or a comparable colonial hardwood — carries the warm honey patina characteristic of late 19th-century furniture produced in Ceylon and the Indian subcontinent for British colonial households. Both the tall, gently reclined back and the compact seat are fitted with hand-woven open-hexagonal cane panels, a construction method preferred across the tropics precisely because it resisted the humidity that would have destroyed upholstered furniture in those climates.
The defining design element is the pair of boldly carved volute scroll armrests — a hallmark of Anglo-Indian plantation seating, appearing on both adult planter's chairs and, more rarely, on child-scale versions produced for colonial family households. The broad, swept rocker rails and the sturdy turned stretcher base are consistent with regional craftsmanship of the period. The chair is structurally sound and fully functional.
Child-scale pieces in this tradition are actively collected by specialists in British Colonial and Anglo-Indian antiques, and the chair works equally well as a decorative accent in bohemian, global, or natural-material interiors — styled with linen, jute, or batik textiles. It would also serve photographers and stylists well as a prop. No maker's label or provenance markings are visible. Review the Condition section before bidding.
CONDITION
Very Good. The hardwood frame is solid and sturdy with no wobble, and the cane panels on both seat and back are intact and holding. Minor surface wear, small nicks, and light checking to the frame are consistent with age and honest use; nothing detracts from display or function.
