Palecek Rattan Pencil Reed Sculptural Fruit Bowl — Pen Shell, Philippines
A sculptural centerpiece and fruit bowl by Palecek of Richmond, California, constructed from pencil reed and bent rattan in a sweeping figure-eight form that echoes the infinity symbol. Two deep oval basket lobes are joined at center and flanked by dramatically outswept wing extensions, all mounted on a continuous curved rocker base. The wing panels are inlaid with pen shell, a hallmark of Philippine export craft, adding dark tonal contrast to the warm honey rattan. Construction throughout shows hand-wrapped rattan joints consistent with Palecek's natural materials tradition.
CONDITION
Good. The rattan and pencil reed framework is structurally intact with no breaks or separating joints. The pen shell inlay panels on both wings show heavy crazing across their full surface — the material has dried and cracked into a mosaic pattern consistent with age. Minor fraying to rattan ends on one wing tip.
