Voland & Sons Analytical Balance New Rochelle NY — Mahogany Glass Case
A two-pan beam analytical balance by Voland & Sons of New Rochelle, New York — one of America's respected institutional instrument makers — built for precision gravimetric work in university and research laboratory settings. The brass column, graduated aluminum beam with rider, wire stirrups, and twin suspended pans are housed inside a mahogany case with glass panels on three sides, a sliding front door, and a black-painted platform base. The glass enclosure is not ornamental; it isolates the beam from air currents that would corrupt measurements down to fractions of a milligram. Brass knurled leveling feet, pan arrest rests, and a state inspection tag on the interior sill speak to an instrument that was actively maintained and relied upon. Serial number 38902 is stamped on the base alongside secondary marking WADLM928.
The lot includes the original laminated ten-point instruction card — "Rules for the Operation and Care of the Balance" — still affixed inside the case, adding an authentic layer of institutional history to an already visually commanding object.
CONDITION
Good. Mechanism is operational and all glass panels are free of cracks or chips. Scuffs and dings are visible on the mahogany case consistent with laboratory use.
