Alvaro Quezada Mata Ortiz Effigy Pottery Jar 9” Figural Vessel
Striking hand-sculpted and hand-painted effigy vessel by Alvaro Quezada Olivas of Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, part of the renowned Quezada family lineage. This sculptural jar features a distinctive animal-form neck with open mouth and applied ears, paired with finely executed polychrome decoration in black and red over a warm cream ground. One side presents a stylized human figure within a circular medallion, while the reverse showcases a bold insect motif, both framed by intricate geometric designs inspired by ancient Casas Grandes (Paquimé) traditions.
As the son of Juan Quezada—the pioneer of the modern Mata Ortiz pottery revival—Alvaro’s work reflects both heritage and individuality. This example highlights the precision, balance, and storytelling that define the tradition, making it a compelling addition for collectors of Southwestern and Mexican folk art.
