Description

Theodore Svenningsen — Railroad Car Running Gear, Oil on Canvas

Oil on canvas by Los Angeles-based conceptual painter Theodore Svenningsen, depicting the complete running gear of a freight car in precise greyscale side profile against an expansive white ground. The car body is entirely absent — dissolved into the unpainted canvas — yet its shape is fully implied by the mechanical infrastructure below: two four-wheel trucks, center bolster and coupling mechanism, air hose connections, draft gear, couplers extending to each end, and a hand brake staff rising from center on a chain. The ghost outline of the underframe extends edge to edge, making the absent car body the painting’s dominant presence. A single horizontal track line divides the lower register; below it, a second pale ground zone mirrors the void above.

The composition is characteristic of Svenningsen’s conceptual practice: the subject is defined by what has been removed rather than what remains. The machinery — rendered with photorealistic drafting precision — is the skeleton of a thing that exists only as absence. The hand brake staff, an instrument used to flag and stop an unmanned standing car, gives the work an additional layer of stillness: the vehicle is frozen, flagged, going nowhere. The void above is not negative space; it is the shape of the car itself. Signed verso. Presented in a thin black floating wood frame without glass.

ABOUT THE ARTIST — Theodore Svenningsen Theodore Svenningsen is a Los Angeles-based painter and conceptual artist with a practice rooted in both fine art and philosophy. He holds a B.A. and Master’s degree in philosophy from UCLA — graduating cum laude and advancing to doctoral candidacy — and an M.F.A. in painting from Otis College of Art and Design. His stated position is that the universe contains more that we don’t know than we do know, and his paintings represent this idea by staging objects that appear visually logical but reveal conceptual instability under sustained attention.

His work has been exhibited at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and The Drawing Center in New York, Artists Space, and the University Art Museum at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in China, among others. Solo and featured exhibitions include “Primitive Structures” at the Torrance Art Museum and shows at Wonzimer Gallery and Transport Gallery in Los Angeles.

His work is held in museum and corporate collections including the Museum of Modern Art Artists Book Collection (New York), the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, the University of Iowa Special Collections, and — of direct relevance to this body of work — the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad Corporate Collection (Seattle). Additional corporate holdings include Bank of America, J.P. Morgan Guarantee Trust, and Prudential Insurance Company of America.
