Pair Painted Wood Panel Icons — Christ & Madonna, Byzantine Style, Wall Hanging
Two devotional icon panels painted in the Byzantine Orthodox tradition, each depicting a religious subject in tempera with gilt ground on dark-stained solid wood. One presents a bust-length portrait of Christ wearing the crown of thorns in warm ochre tones against a dark ground; the other shows the enthroned Virgin with gilded halo and a smaller veiled figure at her side against a deep red field. Both panels feature a raised border molding and carry the visual character of Eastern Orthodox iconography.
This lot comprises both panels as pictured.
CONDITION
Good. Both panels display intentional aging with heavy craquelure and localized paint loss across the painted surfaces consistent with the decorative style. Commercial sawtooth hanging hardware is affixed to the reverse of each panel.
