Hubley 347 Cast Iron Irish Setter Doorstop — Lancaster PA, c.1930s–40s
Pennsylvania, model No. 347, depicting the dog in a classic pointing stance with one front leg raised and tail extended. Incorporated in 1894, Hubley became renowned for hand-painted cast iron figures, and their doorstop dog subjects are among the most collected today. The No. 347 Setter is a full-figured hollow casting comprised of two parts joined with screws painted in and over, finished here in a two-tone black over copper scheme that follows the contoured fur texture across the body, haunches, and feathered tail. Hubley sold their doorstop molds in 1948, placing original examples like this one in the pre-1948 production window.
CONDITION
Good. The casting is solid and structurally intact with no breaks or repairs. Paint loss is scattered across the body, with more pronounced chipping at the top of the head, base of one ear, mid-back, and on several paw pads exposing bare metal.
