Navajo Germantown Saddle Blanket c.1890 — Spider Woman Crosses, Greek Key
A Navajo Germantown saddle blanket from the late transitional period, circa 1890–1910, attributed by Navajo textile consultant Kary Dunham. Woven in commercially-spun aniline-dyed Germantown wool, the piece displays two repeating Spider Woman cross medallions on a heathered grey field. Each cross is rendered in red with teal and cream layering, surrounded by scrolling hooked geometric extensions and flanked by corner elements in purple-grey with red accent squares. A gold-tan inner border transitions to a Greek key outer band in salt-and-pepper tweed with black and terracotta accents. Both ends terminate in dense black fringe with knotted tassels; the long sides carry a wrapped orange selvedge cord.
CONDITION
Fair. The design reads clearly and the weave body remains structurally intact. Staining and discoloration are present throughout the field, the black fringe shows wear and uneven loss, and evidence of old repairs is visible on close inspection.
